vlc doesn't exist for chrome os and even playing dvds can be problematic.

Chromebooks are fairly limited even in the things they claim to excel at. Not to mention a serious lack of apps or usable software. You'd be better off with a tablet to be honest.

My issue with the iPad is mostly cost and the inability to run bit torrent on it (although I haven't played enough with my wife's iPad to figure that out:P).

I got the surface pro and it has surpassed my expectations. Not only do I have a tablet, but I can use it as a laptop. I even bought a docking station that pushes HD video out to my monitor.

Kind of expensive, but I can use all the Office products on it. So I don't have to bring my laptop anywhere I work.

i dunno, trife, but if they are, i might grab one for personal use. i use my work one all the time and *i* love it. don't know if anybody else in the world uses one though haha

Trife: MSFT has been giving away the excess inventory to schools. If you get one, you are not allowed to contact MSFT for support for any reason, including out-of-box failure.

They started this at ISTE this summer, giving away like 15,000 (one per attendee, max one per school).

Now that MSFT is buying Nokia, I expect we'll see a shakeup on who wants to continue to make Windows 8 tablets/smartphones... they'll have a more direct competitor...

It makes sense though. MSFT tried to rally everyone to them when Google bought Moto's mobility division, claiming that if they made Android devices they'd be competing directly with Google themselves. It failed massively, since Android was way better and generally more open source anyway.

Curious to see if Samsung tries to bring out Bada now, and if anyone wants to pick up Blackberry.
