the encyclopedia sez that 1 hp is the power required to lift 33,000 pounds in 1 minute. and it sezs that 1 hp = 746 watts. so, i have this 1300 watt microwave and i'm guessing that it converts out as being 1.72 hp. so, if i nuke something for 35 seconds, is 1 hp of work really happening? i don't really see it as being able to lift 33,000 pounds a distance of 1 foot during those 35 seconds. ugh. math makes me brain hurt.

maybe I'm doing it wrong... how long does it take for 33,000 pounds to drop 1 foot? or would that be minus 1 hp?

I think it means that the energy used by the microwave is the same amount of energy that would be used to lift 33 thousand pounds.

dunno. it's giving me problems with visualization. i was looking at my electric bill and trying to figure out how many horses i would need to do the equivalent amount of work.

its an energy equivalent, not direct correlation.

well, Obama did make it legal to eat horsemeat last year. I'm of the opinion that it's a Democrackaddict conspiracy to eliminate all alternative forms of transportation that doesn't require excessively high insurance payments, don't think I'm nuking any horse meat, but I have this phobia about reading nutrition labels. fairly certain that it's a bad idea for me to have a clue about what it is that I'm eating.

the energy equivalent of 33,000 pounds being raised one foot in one minute. thank you for your assistance. still have problems visualizing it.

see, it would appear that a draft horse would have to spend one minute raising 33,000 pounds a foot in the air for me to be able to use the microwave for 35 seconds.

You cant really visualize it.. its a mathematical equivalence.

1 horsepower is equivalent to 746 watts.

So if you took a 1-horsepower horse and put it on a treadmill, it could operate a generator producing a continuous 746 watts, if the generator is 100% efficient.

So that microwave of yours needs about 1.72 horses to operate continuously.

good thing that my microwave doesn't operate continuously. so, I'd only need the 1.72 horses to run while it's operating. still seems like a lot of energy just to nuke some food. 56,760 pounds being lifted 1 foot for each minute that i operate the microwave.

The thing is, while you are nuking the food with the microwave, much of that energy is wasted.

http://en.wikipedia.org/...e_oven#Heating_efficiency

A microwave oven converts only part of its electrical input into microwave energy. A typical consumer microwave oven consumes 1100 W of electricity in producing 700 W of microwave power, an efficiency of 64%. The other 400 W are dissipated as heat, mostly in the magnetron tube. Additional power is used to operate the lamps, AC power transformer, magnetron cooling fan, food turntable motor and the control circuits. Such wasted heat, along with heat from the product being microwaved, is exhausted as warm air through cooling vents.

For cooking or reheating small meals, the high heating power delivered directly to the meal makes the microwave oven the most efficient appliance.

Consider also that a lot of the microwave energy ends up heating not just the food, but also the plates, panels, trays, etc as well.

You BEAST! You shouldn't microwave horsemeat. You should grill it like a civilized person.
