I bought a bridgeport mill with a 1hp 3 phase motor. It is currently hooked up to 480 volts.

I have 220v feed into my garage. Will a rotory phase converter with a 220v input give me the power to run this mill? Or do I need to have a 480v feed ran to the garage?
If 480v feed, do the electric lines running to the house have to be upgraded?

Maybe a Graetz bridge from a standard 220v feed will do? 1hp is nothing. I dont see why it would need 3 phase or 480v.
This would be ~0.75 kW which is about half of what my coffee maker pulls. :P

Also why are you saying hp? Electrical motors are usually in watts or kilowatts or megawatts.

Also a Bridgeport will require 3phase for it to work, yes mostly needing 480v a rotary converter can work but for extended time/life you will need new wiring from the pole.. and a new bill from the company.

You would almost be better off replacing the 3phase parts with single phase ones or finding 220v equivalent that way you don't need to change your garage.

Bug, They sell a kit to convert to 1 phase, but there you are taxed with lower torque and lower speeds. Also, there is some modifications to the spindle bore and keyway for it to work, none of which I am interested in doing. A 220v version is also not as robust as the 480v version.

Re-wiring the garage for 480V is an option as I am also picking up a lathe and a surface grinder. This really comes down to adding more breaker boxes and digging a trench from the house to the garage (after I already put in a new patio and its in the path).
