I've noticed the way I and many others around where I live say the word "February" in a particular way that basically seems wrong. I wonder if this is a dialect thing that is common to my area or if it's just a mispronunciation that most people do.

So here's the issue:
When you say "February," do you pronounce it "Feb-you-ary" or "Feb-rue-ary." Basically it's a matter of whether you pronounce the first "r" or not.

If you answer, please also include what state/province/country you live in, because otherwise responses aren't particularly helpful.

For full disclosure, I live in central Illinois, and most people I know do NOT pronounce the first "r." We save that "r" for the word "wash" which many people around here pronounce as "warsh."

Currently live in NE ohio, raised in tennessee. Nothing wrong with a r in wash, expecially if its in the "crick"

Oh i know! I think its funny that some people think that only happens down south, but this is good proof that its happens anywhere things get a little "rural". not sure why but it does

Also, it is unforgivably wrong to pronounce 'wash' as 'warsh'. ;)

I would say close to the second though I probably say it more like: Feb - bru- ary

Live in Indiana past 9 years, grew up (0- 18) on Long Island then lived 24 years in Virginia Beach.


I like to add extra r's in alot of my words though. like water as War-ter

feb-rue-ary: I lived 34 years in SE Michigan and the last 6 in SE North Carolina.

More than one person has commented on my accent being from nowhere since I am quite well traveled, but as the son of an English teacher, I was taught from a young age to not be sloppy with my pronunciation.

In New England we typically drop the r's.

And I guess for anyone else that posts, if you've lived multiple places, which of those places do you think most affects how you speak--instead of where you live. After all, I lived up near Chicago for several years, but I never developed the Chicago accent.

Feb-rue-ary - Ontario, CAN. Though I've most likely dropped the r on occasion when speaking fast or something in a sentence..

bah, i had it in there but it must have been removed with my adding of wed-nes-day being pronounced wends-day

I say feb-oo-ary.

Most of the time, I'll use "Feb-rue-ary." Though I know I skip the R every now and then. Just can't be bothered to add it when I'm in a hurry.
