how exactly does one spend 1B on security? assuming a policeman's salary is say 50k, you could afford to hire 20k policemen for a YEAR for that.... so assuming only only have to pay for 1/12th their salary ( a month of pay for 3 days of work...) you could afford 240k policemen... so assume you need to transport some of them and that could be expensive say, and some food etc, so divide that by 3 and you'll still have 80k policemen.... i don't see how any amount of protesters could get through 80k policemen....

The 1bil isn't just for security.. There's also a G8 going on a bit before the G20, 2 hours north of Toronto in Hunstville near where I live that this money is going to as well.. A bunch of money has gone to improving some of the little shanty towns around here which has sparked some controversy..

there are also lots of metal etc detectors which aren't cheap and also other security guys with microphones on their ears.

The federal government is spending another $160 million for the G8 and G20 summits, above and beyond the $933 million for policing the giant events.

That now raises the price tag to $1.1 billion -- and further costs are likely.
