Goldeneye was the first mainstreme fps that 4 peoe could play at the same time. IMO it launched fps.

edit: it sold over 8million copies and all but invented the deathmatch multiplayer mode, along with others. IMO it started the trend of not only developing a campaign mode, but building a multiplayer enviroment that was just as much, if not more fun

the best FPS experience is the following.

When they released doom 3d on xbox, it came with a special edition that contained doom 1 & 2 for xbox version that they made. Identical to the old PC version except for xbox. The cool thing? you can play 4-player co-op split screen.. AND the enemies are 4 TIMES as difficult to kill and there are 4 times as many of them..

+ all 4 of you have to be dead for you to lose. Otherwise you just respawn when you die at the beginning of the level with a pistol..

it is in a word...AWESOME. Get a case of beers, 3 mates, and play 4-player co-op doom session.

4 player via IPX, used to play it on bulletin boards, and i think you could use Kali for tcp/ip, but i didn't get Kali until i was Quaking.

You are picking at straws here. Goldeneye brought multiplayer fps mainstream, had the 3d graphics, and did it in 1997. I doubt that even 5% of the 8million+ players knew of the complex steps it took to play doom with others. The only way that was even possible was due to modders and what not.

Goldeneye was designed to be a multiplayer fps from the start. I might give you doom as the genetic makeup, or grandfather to the multiplayer fps, but goldeneye is most def what put it on the map and generated widespread interest.

mrford is entirely correct. The exact same FPS formula and basic framework that is used ad nauseam in every generic shooter released nowadays (CoD especially) found its start in Goldeneye. One of the most revolutionary games of all time, in my opinion. Doom or even Wolfenstein 3D might have been the original FPS, but Goldeneye brought the genre to a whole new level, the exact same way Final Fantasy VII brought RPGs into the mainstream.

Doom 1 and Doom 2 were played alot against other humans and even Quake 1 came before GE 007.
