It won't be put back into circulation. It will be removed from circulation and other notes will be put into circulation in their stead... as part of the UK's effort to get rid of 500 pound notes.

One day, I want to try to spend a $10,000 bill in McDonald's... their signs say they won't take 50s or 100s... but nothing about $10,000s.

Didn't the government stop printing anything over $100 quite a few years ago?

yeah they did but still 1000 bills and 500 bills are in use (or was 1.5 years ago), 10k bills most likely aren't usable anymore.

Why wouldn't 10k bills be usable?

I mean, truthfully, you'd be stupid to use them because their value to collectors far exceeds their face value, but every coin and bill ever issued by the US government is still legal tender.

They're certainly discontinued, which means they won't be issued by the US government, but there's still somewhere a little over 300 10k bills out there. No reason why you couldn't spend them if you really wanted to.

Yup - what foog said. If it's still in circulation, it's still legal tender.

Vendors can refuse them as payment though.

300 isn't exactly hardly any - that's $3,000,000 worth of 'em.

I would assume that there's none in active circulation in the sense that they're getting spent and passed from one party to another. If one were to enter circulation, I'm sure that it would quickly be removed by someone who knew its true value.

I stand by what I said originally though. I'd love to go into a McDonald's and see their faces as I try to spend a $10,000 bill.
