Few things that are important, he doesn't own the team, he owns the franchise rights. If the overall corporate entity thinks his running the franchise is hurting the brand they have built in the ability to force him to sell. This is capitalism at it's finest, the other owners know how much sponsorship money could potentially be lost due to him retaining the club and will force him out. Secondly he knew the conversation was being recorded, he had his ex record all their conversations to help him recall what was said latter (as reported by ESPN).
He's also a hypocritical POS so bonus points for karma.
