Do they work like D/O allies? i.e. send 1/4 of their total number of spies, but cannot more than double your total spy number.

or do they work differently?

According to a cryptic post made by qz, your allies send 20% of their spies to help. No idea anything else, and only 3 people know the formula: qzjul, pang and h4.

I think your results are shared with them somehow - though, my spy results are never stored as they should be.

spy allies don't know who you have spied (unless its alliances allowed server and ops are uploaded to hosting site like boxcar).

I don't think the ally loses any spies when an op fails - although I have not checked that to be certain. Has anyone else checked?

allies don't lose spies, at least haven't noticed it.
