The defender loses _approximately_ 5% units. This is modified by Medical tech, how far you are into DR, the NW difference between the attacker and you, and by a small random luck factor.
The attacker always loses _exactly_ 8% of what he sends. If he only lost 3000, he sent exactly 37500 jets.
The above applies only if the attack broke through. If the attack failed, then the defender loses an additional 50% more units (this is called "lemming" attacks if done repeatedly to lower your defense by failing on purpose). The defender only loses the "5%" of what would have been your required defense to just be sufficient for him to break you, multiplied by 1.5, in this case.
