I need to rant.

In my life I've owned about 10 phones. Old Nokias. Motorola Pebl and Razr (2). HTC phone. BB Bold 9700 (2). iPhone 4. Nexus 5. I've also owned about 4 laptops. I have NEVER had any technical issues, any accidental damage, ANYTHING gone wrong with anything until like 8 months ago when the flood gates opened.

First, my MacBook Pro's backlight burns out. Cost way too much to replace the display so I figure I can just do it myself. End up destroying the LVDS cable in the process. I was able to return the display, but now the repair is even more expensive because to replace the LVDS cable you have to open the whole thing. Ended up finding a good sale on a touch HP, so I got that instead.

A couple of weeks later, I toss my iPhone onto the couch (like I do 100 times) when I come home. Only this time, I miss the cushion and manage to hit the arm rest. I have no idea how, but the screen COMPLETELY shattered. Gone to bits. I tossed it so gently I was shocked. Glass everywhere.

I buy a Nexus 5. Arrives and everything is great. I put it in a case with a screen protector, and all is well. About February I started noticing small red marks on the screen. I ignore them, but then I figure that I don't want the issue to get worse. I call Google a couple weeks ago and they issue an RMA.

Brand new Nexus 5 arrives last week (Thursday). I take it out of the box, set it all up the way I like, and it works wonderfully. I didn't like my old case, so I ordered a new one. In the mean time, I was using it without the case. Sunday afternoon in the middle of a call my microphone stops working. Since then, the mic hasn't been working. I try troubleshooting to see if this is a software issue, no luck. I'm at work, literally picking the phone up off the desk at lunch to call Google and start another RMA for the mic problem (I've read online that it's pretty common). As I pick up the phone, it slips out of my hand, and lands corner first on the ground. BANG, a nice crack going right down the whole length of the display. Warranty gone. ONE WEEK after taking it out of the box. Case arrived today.

I have NEVER had so much bad luck with technology in such a concentrated period of time. Every single phone or computer that I've had before I've used to the end of their lifetime. In the last 8 months 2 screens crack, and 1 display is shot.

Now I'm trying to find somebody in the GTA who buys damaged macbooks to sell my laptop to. I'm hoping to get the $400 out of it to buy a new Nexus 5. My current phone is fine. The crack in the screen isn't too bad, and I had ordered a tempered glass screen protector off eBay for $5 to use it... but I can't use it without a microphone and I'm not going to walk around with a bluetooth in my ear everywhere I go. It's now basically an iPod with data.

Ugh!

You should be able to still have the mic issue handled by google and probably have to pay 150 - 200 on the screen if they won't cover it. Could have sworn Nexus 5 was gorilla glass.

It is GG3... but even that isn't crack proof. And I called Google and LG. As soon as the screen is cracked warranty won't cover anything. I'd have to send my phone to LG and have them give me an estimate on the total repair (screen AND mic). They are also unwilling to repair JUST the mic without repairing the screen.

I'm hopefully going to be able to sell the macbook for 450 and get a new one.

"The screen is probably more likely to shatter from a lateral impact than hitting you knee. Probably the worst thing you can do is drop it on it's corner onto a hard surface. "

From that link Marshal posted. That's exactly what happened. There's so much tension in that screen. It's great for hits straight on, but the sudden spike in pressure on one corner just made it go.

I've never had issue with cell phones. Even my latest one keeps on ticking despite being kicked, dropped, soaked, left in a hot car, dropped on the beach (twice) and left for dead and I don't know how many times I've dropped it getting in and out of vehicles. It's been like that for about 4 years now. The sim card and camera no longer work, but I feel lucky the damned thing even turns on at all.

Laptops, I've had plenty of cussing sessions over. I bought a Sony VAIO in Japan from the PX on Kadena AFB. I got it back to my camp and immediately had screen and motherboard issues with it(mouse jumped all over the place, screen flickered). I took it back, got a new one (different model this time) and it had a bad HD. Then I exchanged it for an HP. That POS was riddled with device driver issues, HD issues as well.

Finally, on the 4th try I got another VAIO and that one didn't have any issues for about 5 months. I managed to get it home to the US where it crashed about 3 weeks later. I didn't buy another computer for almost 4 years, but I did inherit an old Compaq that had minimal functionality (just enough to do job applications, really).

I bought an Acer from Best Buy in 2009 while at dive school and in the first 2 months I had it, it was in the possession of Geek Squad most of the time. It had more issues than I can remember. In the time I had it, it had two screen replacements (once because I punched it...), one new MB and two new HDs. I gave up on it after it started shutting itself off for no apparent reason. It's now sitting at a local makers space with self proclaimed 'tech-sperts' who, to my knowledge, have failed to do anything productive with it so far.

The last one (before the current) was a Lenovo. It worked well enough for a while then the wireless started going wonky. The the sound, then some screen issues with constant online errors. I made several attempts to fix, but eventually had enough. A youtube music video jam session went awry one evening and I lost my temper. After putting my fist through the screen, I broke the remaining components in half over my knee and then flung the disjointed heap into a nearby wall.

I enjoyed a laptop free life for about two weeks before replacing it with this ASUS and I have had no mentionable issues with it. Youtube music video jam sessions have continued for months without issue. :P

I have a couple of decade old Nokias that while the buttons may be work out, the rest of the phone is impervious to the sort of damage you seem to inflict upon phones. For 500M bushels (paid within the next round by any country) I will mail them both to you for free (other than the cost of bushels).

I eagerly anticipate your reply.

Also the phones have several Earthers phone numbers on them and I will not erase those numbers for an additional 500M bushels. In that case all bushels must be paid in the next three days and I doubt you can convince your alliance to start mass FAing me in such a time frame.

Anyways, it's an offer.

Phone I'm using is from 2003ish...I've lost a few phones over the years including a 2 week old one going through the wash, but I"ve always had the old ones since well....they don't make them like they used to. And now honestly with smart phones I'm just unwilling to pay for them.

Now for laptops.

Toshiba about 4 years ago. I'd it for about a year year and a half. One night watching a movie on it. Set it down for the night, got up the next morning ot check email and screen was dead. So I got an HP which about a year later I splashed a good solid oz of liquid on the keyboard, there went that. I'm getting to that point with my newest HP which has all kinds of issues which I assume are softare. Just had not one but 2 external HD's crash in the last year....the same day.

Technology is an expensive thing to enjoy, but we need it.

Ended up getting $320 for the macbook (the video output from the logic board ended up being shorted.) I'm going to sell the Nexus for $130 and buy a new one.

I've had pretty good luck with my computers. I hope I don't regret typing that but over the decades all i've had to contend with are two HD's after years of use and one bad display with an old Compaq laptop.

I'm a cheap bastard when it comes to mobile phones; I don't live with a phone in my hand 24/7 so I see no need to dish out a lot of money for my phone or mobile service. I especially don't want to be locked into a contract.
So I've been a prepaid customer for years.

Cricket Wireless just went from CDMA to GSM on AT&T's network and offering a lot of deals right now. I picked up a Moto G for $100 after $50 mail-in rebate, includes two years free 50GB storage on Google Drive.

This is Motorola's entry into the budget smartphone market and I am impressed. Specs are 4.5" GG HD display (1280 x 720, 329ppi), Snapdragon 400 processor with 1.2 GHz quadcore CPU running a clean stock KitKat, with a 2070 mAh battery that lasts me through the day. Since I can access wifi 90% of the time I went with a low data plan that includes unlimited everything (data speed throttled back at 500MB, never overage charges) for $35/month flat with autopay.
When I need more high speed data, like on a road trip, I can bump up my data plan $10/month for 2.5GB or $20 for 5GB; since there's no contract I can drop it back down to the basic plan the next month.

Not for everyone, but fits my needs perfectly and it really is a great little phone at a minuscule cost.

Moto G is a great phone. Motorola is really doing wonderful things. Between the X, G, and E, you can get a pretty much stock Android experience, with specs that are more than sufficient.

I went with the Nexus 5 because I use my phone quite a lot for work as well, and for $350 I was getting a phone with the same specs as $700 Samsungs, LGs, and HTCs. I'm on a corporate plan through work so I'm paying $50 a month for unlimited text, 350 day time, 1000 incoming, 200 long distance, unlimited evening and weekend, all the voice mails, caller ID, 911, etc. and 6G of data which I use 80-90% of every month. That fits my needs perfectly.

And at the end of the day, that's all that matters. All these fanboys who will brag about their phone or their plan and this and that are just stupid kids. A phone meets needs which are different for each individual.
