Maybe it’s because I’m from Belgium that I respect it so much.
We only have cases with 24 bottles
AAAAAAAH!
I see now...
A carton in Australia is a box of 30x375mL cans of beer
then we had the slab of 24x375mL cans or 375mL stubbies (so called because they were a stubby bottle (because a longneck bottle is 750mL) (called a slab because the box shape overall was flatter than a carton)
Nowadays, the term carton is used interchangeably between the original 30 carton/block, and the 24 can slab, mostly because anything not beer (pre mix spirits, cider etc) only comes in a maximum of 24 can/bottle slabs, not the 30 can block.
EDIT: And, shrinkflation has also killed off the 375mL stubby, and now they're almost universally 330mL :/
