You have to put it into historical perspective. People didn't view animals/pets in the same light back then that we do now.

A common magic trick to make pigeons "dissapear" was to crush the pigeon and eject it from the cage, then release a new pigeon somewhere else.. or was it doves:P Yeah just like that trick on the prestige:P
