Hmm... on the site it says I need a source engine game installed on steam? Is there a way to not do that?

You only need Source SDK Base 2007, which is free.

Steam > Library -> Tools -> Source SDK Base 2007 -> Install

Googling helps. Or Binging if that's your thing.
