China would need 100 years at 20% growth to catch up to the United states. (GDP/capita)
India would need closer to 100% growth over the same period of time.

Somehow, that fails to inspire me.
I am a troll. Everything I say must be assumed to be said solely to provoke an exaggerated reaction to the current topic. I fully intend to bring absolutely no substance to any discussion, ongoing or otherwise. Conversing with me is pointless.

Unless you combine that with a decline in GDP per capita in the US.

who says anything about it being inspirational. It was simply a statement of fact to put into perspective the actual level of difference in spite of the media hype.

The US economy is growing, the rest of the world is simply catching up.

I dunno, I think I'm helping them catch up much faster than that. The sheer volume of groupons and dealfinds I order that end up being shipped from China has GOT to be making a difference... lol

Who cares about the debt? Doesn't affect my daily life.

First get a strong enough economy for a surplus... THEN pay off your debt. I mean, do you pay off your credit card at the expense of letting your family starve? I don't think so.

China's GDP per capita is about 1/10th of USAs (a bit more than that).

20% growth = China's GDP per capita doubles approx every 5 years => China catches up in 15 years with no US growth, about 20 with US growth at 2% pa

umm. If China grows at 20%/year doesnt that mean 82 million times its current number? Or that per capita gdp in china in 100 years will be approximately $400 Billion/per capita/per year?

similarly if the US continues growing at the optimistic pace of 3%/year then in a hundred years the US per capita GDP would be 1.25M.

------------------------------

Just sticking with per capita numbers

so with 20% growth/year in 100 years china's per capita gdp would be:

$400,000,000,000

vs

USs current per capita gdp which is apprx

$65,000

You do realize you're pulling numbers out of your collective asses? China's growth has been nowhere near 20% in the past few years. It's been slowing down to the single digits. Last year it was 7.7%, down from 9.3%. It's growth is largely dependent on the US, when the US slows down, China slows down. You can't create wealth out of thin air without leeching it from someone else.

Edit: Either way China's GDP/capita was $5,445 for 2011, the US is $48,442. I fail to see how you can possibly reach around and pull millions out of your magic hat in a hundred years.

China is in a much better financial position iNouda. The only way the US can even finance their imports from China is because China buys up a lot of dollars. In fact they could bankrupt the US in a heartbeat. I'd play nice with them. It would hurt the US far more than China.
Because if the Chinese wanted to, considering the potential of their domestic market, they could consume all those products themselves. Exporting their goods to the US isn't their only option for growth.

not really, either debt is forgiven or its extended to eternal (pretty much same as prev.) or it does bankcrupcy and doesn't pay its debs or debt gets paid by manufactured goods.

we'll see what option is used on greece's case, 1st 2 are against eu contract, 3rd is quite likely and 4th is highly unlikely.

dear inouda,

I clearly don't believe that anyone's GDP will be $400,000,000,000 USD/capita/annum in 100 years.

I was simply pointing out that martian is either trolling or is bad at math.
