Uh.

"The trajectory of the flight, which I traced twice today, indicates that there was a deviation from the runway, not only in terms of altitude, but also width of no less than 150 meters," Shoigu said.

Hence, why I brought up Die Hard 2.

With such important political figures of your country, I don't think they would fail to screen for a terrorist to be their pilot. So we can count that out. Fail pilot? Again, unless by some insane way, there's no way they would get an idiot to fly the plane.

So what remains? Bad info? Fog? *gasp* someone shooting the plane down?

Man, Poland is always on the bad end of things....

DH2, the guy hacked the system and changed the altitude (height). that's why the plane crashed.

in this incident, the plane was traveling at a wrong altitude according to what that guy says.

I'm not trying to defend the pilot, but it would take a real idiot to fly at a wrong altitude and not notice it, if they were working properly.

it was in fog, and it said he was off the runway by like 150m width-wise as well...

if your instruments are wrong in fog....

qz, the question is, why was his instruments wrong.

in DH2, it was hacked.

in this case, was it? or could Poland be using some really crappy plane to transport their most important figures of their country?

we'll probably never know, even if the black box was recovered. `

From Digg..

"It doesn't have to be a conspiracy; Tupolev 154s were lousy planes; there have been 6 crashes of Tu-154 aircraft in the past 5 years. The weather was bad, and the plane clipped some tree tops.

Quoted from http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...nt-plane-cr_n_532768.html :
"According to the Aviation Safety Network, there have been 66 crashes involving Tu-154s, including six in the past five years."

Poland couldn't afford to upgrade their presidential aircraft. That's the sad part. Not even their president could fly in anything better than a Tu 154."

Tu154s were perfectly fine for what they do - a lot of rough field operations - a lot of strips in russia that you would think twice about landing a cessna on

as for accident records, critical element is the servicing and servicability of aircraft just plain thrashed to death

its a real shame that most governments now can't be fluffed in the upkeep of top-notch aircraft to take heads of state around - i think that things will change radically in europe (at least) now.

In theory, he never got off the plane, and the plane is Polish Government Owned, so yes, he did "die" in Poland.

Much like a boat is registered in a country, it's under that country's laws.

If you've ever flown on Russian airlines, you'll know that something like this is not only less than surprising....it's almost commonplace. The TU-154 is something along the lines of flying in a 1960's freight plane. I had the "pleasure" of flying from Minsk to Moscow once on a TU-154 once - I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to be able to see bolts wiggling around in flight....

the president rejected buying a new plane last year because it would cost a lot.

I don't care who owned it, it doesn't change who manufactured it, TU-154's are Russian built planes. I'm just sayin those things are downright scary to fly in, but are pretty standard for the region.

I don't think he was Polish, was he? Pretty sure he was born in Graz, Austria. What does an Austrian Duke have to do with a plane crash anyways? Is the Black Hand making a big comeback or something?

btw, interesting historical side note.... The bridge protected by UNESCO (and the one pictured on the Wikipedia article) in Sarajevo is actually NOT the bridge the Arch Duke Ferdinand was assassinated on, only where his driver made a wrong turn and had to detour from. The actual bridge is about 2 blocks north, and marked by a historical marker.

WW2 started more or less when Germany FSed Poland, and Poland's LDPs decided not to jump in right away in the hopes of appeasing Germany's leadership...Russia's NAP with Germany meant that Russia could also invade Poland, and it pretty much became a gangbang afterwards.

nobody really had a lot to gain by killing off the prez of Poland. A guy flying a POS plane in crappy weather into an airport he had never flown into at night; a bunch of trees that probably should have been trimmed but nobody ever got around to it; I can only imagine that the Russian version of a navigational beacon system is comprised of . . .

I know they said the plane was told not to land.

That's what I read. He had lambasted another pilot before, for making him late by landing somewhere else due to dangerous conditions. Although, the president claimed the pilot would be punished for it, he ended up getting a medal instead. Ah, well.

Not quite on the WW2 stuff....

Germany FS'ed Czechoslovakia (politically), and Britain and France did nothing. When Poland was FS'ed, that's when the allies actually did something.... but they basically just sat around in France and waited for the entire Phony war before the blitzkrieg happened in the west. I think you're also missing out on the campaign in Scandinavia, which had more action in the early part of the war for the allies, as well as the African campaign which was largely done by Italy.

So, on AT 1940.... The czechs, who were recently tag killed, are flaming their LDP's for not helping them, Poland is requesting help but they're basically tagkilled already. Britain and France put together a quick CS in the north while they save turns and Churchill is spinning things to try to get aid/help from Britain's longtime uNAP, the USA. The USA is still netting.
