As the day goes on, my wifi speed dips below 5 mbps. It starts at 60 mbps in morning time. The sharng of it increases as we come home from work/school in my house. 3 adults and a 12yr old. Playstations 3&4, wiiu, tablets, phones, stupid chrome book.. the playstations are usually streaming netflix and or gamming at the same time. And the chrome(son) is youtubing. We've never had this problem with our speeds dipng so low before.usually was/is 30mbps in the evening, now its below 5 and my upload speed is something to laugh at. My ping also goes into 500's when it normally at 40-50ish.

I have 100mbps/1terabyte package.

I called the provider, they did whatever they do when i called and it was low when i called. Tired of paying(85$) to lag out.

They said they see.nothing wrong and couldnt help me.

Any suggestions on how to correct this? New router?

Most likely a router issue, interference with the wireless signal between various wireless devices or someone else using your signal.
Is it just your wireless connection that slows down or your wired connection as well.
If your wired connection is fine then it's not your ISP

Do you use cable internet?

Your router is probably the issue.
-Plug a laptop directly into your cable modem. Connect to the internet, and do a speedtest.net
-Do you get the speeds that you are paying for?
-Now, plug back your router, and do a speedtest again wirelessly. Rediculously reduced speed?

Most routers create a bottle neck for your speed to 30mbps like you were saying, but below that is crazy.

Troubleshooting if your cable modem is giving you correct speeds...
-Make sure your router is in a high position (IE not on the floor)
-Make sure it isnt under or surrounded by glass (i had this issue before)
-Change it to use a different channel (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9...)
-Set it to only use G (or N if all your devices have N cards now)
-Update the firmware if there is an update available (youll need to plug directly into it)

If all that fails its time to get a new one... and make sure it can support putting out highspeeds

So is it your wireless router that's slowing down of the actual internet? Have you figured that out yet?

On mine I can dial in to the DSL router and see what it says the connection speed is...

did somebody screw with the QoS so that they could download their porn faster? or perhaps Diablo3 needed more bandwidth?

new router or shared connection like cable modem will do this sort of thing. a lot of providers oversell service.

Our router is around 4 yrs old. We have cable internet with the wifi output.

Wired connecttion is great. Around 75 most times we check. Wr play alot of final fantasy: a realm reborn thru the ps4 & 3. Its just my wifi blows llama facts.

Im on chan 6, seems to work better then a fe other chans we have had it on.

Ive also noticed, that when i use ookla, tospeed check. Alot of times the server ookla chooses sucks. Like it chose auroa, illinois a few minutes ago, it was around 9mbps. I chose one myself, normal, illinois and it was almost 70mbps as wifi.

Not sure what tje difference is..

try different router/modem.

also check your modem's/router's logs if there is something.

also try changing frequency (some frequencies are quite crowded).

A couple things that come to mind... I didn't see a model number, but i'll be honest I skimmed the thread.

Depending on if it's a wireless G/N router you will could have different settings for different bands.

Check for settings for 2.4 ghz and 5ghz. Each company labels things different, but basically you should try the different frequency and band types to see if it helps. If you're getting signal/packet loss there is probably an interference issue.

for 1 speedtest.net is not accurate. have you ever heard of download boost which is offered by most of the major internet providers. it gives you a temporary boost in downloading and uploading but diminishes quickly. the packages sent by speedtest.net are very small. so the speed boost usually masks your real speeds. try "testmy.net" goto test my internet then select are the larger package. the larger package will take 5-15mins to DL but it will show you a much more accurate upload and download speed since it is so large.

but it does sound like you have a router problem. i just had some issues like this a couple months ago. just got a better router. have had no issues since. sometimes a router a couple years old just cant cut it.

Speedtest.net =ookla no?

If it is, i finding its very unaccurate and very dependent on which server it conects itself to

I think i will jist get a new router.

Mediacom is my provider, i have the router they gave me four years ago. When i had 15mbps and a 250gig limit. Im thinking my upgrade surrpassed the router. Its dipped down again tonight. Very frustrating to pay for something you cant enjoy.

Your old router may very well be the problem but there are a couple of things you can try first.

It sounds like you're using the 2.4ghz range. It would be worth checking to see how many networks are around that might interfere with your signal. inSSIDer is a good program for checking what networks you can see and what channels they are using. This gets important because there are actually only 3 channels you can use that don't interfere with each other, 1, 6, and 11. As an example, anything in between 1 and 6 will reduce the speed of users on both. If you have a lot of networks near the channel you are using then expect to have speed issues.

Another common issue with routers is that they're cheap pieces of fluff. Even if the hardware gets made decently the software never is. Installing ddwrt or other open source firmware usually increases speed 10-20% even when your router is running properly. Installing ddwrt is also how I've resolved irc connection issues in the past. The installation can get complicated though and isn't for everyone.

Does using a dual channel router works?
Some old wifi hardware will slow down the whole network when nearer hardware is connected.
