Insane. I used to go there ALL the time. That war memorial area was where I used to have a session before walking around parliament.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was seperatist/FLQ-type terrorists over islamic ones on any given day...

...but based on the fact that yesterday some guy in Quebec who was a radicalized jihadist ran over two soliders (one died... really sad story.) I'd guess it's related to that whole jihadist movement.

fluff terrorism

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out and what motivs were. Thankfully the responce time was pretty impressive and the one known gunman is dead. Various reports about more than one though, but we all know how that goes.

It's hard to say if it's really organized/ terrorist related. Giving the leanings of our current government it doesn't surprise me that they would jump immediately to that. Is it a loan wacko or something organized? Who knows. Rightfully the policy is to over-react and take no chances: "Canadian Armed Forces personnel, at least in the Ottawa area, are being instructed not to wear their uniform in public unless on duty, a source said."

As an aside, I find ontario does a piss poor job of teaching canadian history (as opposed to quebec where they just like to add fiction/spin to it:P). You have to realize that this isn't the first or second time something like this has happened although I think it's the first time a soldier has been killed :(.

Canada has a history of brutally squashing rebellions, killing the leaders, and then partially giving in to the demands afterwards.

As for FLQ/quebec terrorism? long gone. Besides they would prefer to simply smash random stuff anyway, plus they won't be trying that again for a long time.

last time I was in Ottawa I think we went there.. can't remember if you were there with us or not..

"thankfully the responce time was pretty impressive and the one known gunman is dead." We spend a lot of money (relative to other things) on policing and it's typically the largest budget item for most cities/counties by far followed by public transit . It's just not in your face.
And although I'm no expert in this, based on the high profile incidents with gunmen in canada over the years I think their policy is typically shoot to kill as fast as possible.

I think I read somewhere that it was actually the seargent-at-arms that nailed the coward. At 58 years young he had been complaining about the lack of building security for a while apparently. He will probably be taken seriously now. He saved some lives no doubt.

Another curious thing is the lack of victims. The soldier was killed, but one would think with the 20+ shots reported in parlament someone else would of been hit. Really bad gunman or motives that arnt fully understood.

Yea; totally weird eh; I think the terrorism thing in the news was a bit premature; it sure sounded like one (or two) crazy - and not particularly organized - people

canadians arent used to murders, so it wont take much for there to be a huge impact to everyday society. pretty sure a beheading would take them right from hockey and polite smiles to armbands and salutes in like a week

You can never truly know someone's motives, especially after they've been killed. But to me crazy is someone walking outside and shooting random people for random reasons (he thought they were controlled by brain sucking slugs). The targets seem thought out, political and symbolic. The guy was on a government watch list and had his passport revoked. We don't just do that to anyone, you need to have clearly demonstrated a motivation to take up arms along side other extremists.

People have been saying for the last few years that the new age of terrorism isn't large coordinated attacks. The more sophisticated the plan, the more likely you're going to be caught. This is just the new reality the world and Canada will have to face moving forward. I can only hope we do it with wisdom and grace. Not fear and sensationalism.

2 security officers at Parliament were also reported as injured in the gunfire.
