snag a scanner, or at the very least something you can listen to the radio on. doubles as entertainment and hearing protection. most tracks have a local FM station that broadcasts the track announcer, and MRN/PRN is always broadcasting the race locally. Never been to ATL.
I usually go all out and rent FanVision. For just Sunday, the rental is $45 and an additional headset (so 2 people can listen to the same device) is another $15. Seems really expensive, but being able to listen to a team's last 5 min or so of radio communication is really cool. you can also pick up to 3 drivers, and while you are listening to the MRN broadcast, if any of those teams have radio communication it will cut in and play it for you. it is a scanner, an instant replay machine, has in-car camera views, and tons of other fluff like lap times and more. but like i said, it is expensive, and you have to wait in line to get them before the race, and wait in line after the race to turn them in. I usually camp so that isnt too big of a deal to me, but a day tripper it might be.
There are also places to rent cheaper scanners that dont have the video screen, i dont remember their prices, but for most you just type in the car number and the communication is live. THis is manual and not as imersive of an experience, but it is better than nothing.
A simple set of AM/FM Headsets work fine if you want to listen to the MRN broadcast, but make sure you look up the frequency.
Traffic is going to suck no matter how you slice it. you can usually park on speedway property for free, but it will take you 2 hours atleast to leave because you are so close to the track. Parking a half mile or more away will usually run you $20 but offer an easier escape. At least in charlotte anyways. If you park for free you might as well plan on tailgating and grilling after the race. It is a lot more fun than sitting in your car in a line that isnt moving wasting gas.
Sucks that you dont drink, that is usually the most fun part, but you can bring any drinks into the track as long as there is no glass and the cooler is smaller than 14x14x14 (they arnt too strict on those dimensions either in my experience). I also usually take a backpack with snacks and asprin, spare ear plugs, a poncho, and other random fluff in it. Beef. Jerky. Im not sure as to individual track policies on clear bags though, so you might want to google Atlanta's but Bruton owns both of them so i dont know why it would be too different.
Have a good time and enjoy the atmosphere. Join some random tailgates.
