As a rep you are going to be spied a lot so you need to be an unusually unattractive target. Spend a decent number of turns building cs (early game) or cashing (mid-late game).

i have played since approximately 97 or 99.

The cost of bouncing is huge. Your men are greatly demoralized, you have huge losses and don't get anything in return. You now have to spend a bunch of time building CS or running spy ops in order to recover instead of building on land.

What is your approach for grabbing blind, i.e. without a spy report?

The real reason why some nations are prosperous and others are not is simple - economic freedom. If you look at Botswana you can see a nation that was for many years the world's fastest growing economy exactly because of the culture of fiscal restraint brought upon by it's dire poverty. Or look at Hong Kong. A barren rock with practically no natural resources that became the financial center of Asia. When you have dictatorships, no rule of law, violence run amuck and war you are not going to have prosperity.

Any time you are significantly fatter than the rest of the scores list you are in danger of being landgrabbed. Really you are always in danger of being landgrabbed. This also varies by server. Alliance is the worst in terms of danger of being landgrabbed. Tourney seems much more relaxed in that respect, which is not to say that landgrabs don't happen. Both your SPAL and your TDP (total defense points) play a roll in deterring would be invaders, so increasing either of those, your networth can help with this situation. While being grabbed or even farmed is unfortunate it's not the end of the world, you just have to rebuild and move on. This problem is smallest for tech countries which tend to be very land thin.

At what point, if any, would it be appropriate for a farmer to start cashing instead of building cs's when they are in danger of becoming landfat?

excuse me 12 / 18 hour. theoretically checking your country every turn and playing it would be best, except for this bonus, because you would have the most up to date information and your country would always be at it's peak however I think that even without the bonus waiting a day might be best anyway, since a broader strategic vision is enabled by having a multitude of turns. The 3-6 turn bonus is pretty big so I guess waiting exactly 18 hours is optimal.
